Language Learning and Technology

Research and Design Group

Founded in 2007, the Langauge Learning & Technology Research and Design Group is a student-led educational technology research and design group that meets on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Its membership is comprized mostly of Instructional Technology PhD and Masters students in the UT Curriculum and Instruction department in the College of Education. The group explores the ways computer technology (esp. artificial intelligence and unbundled APIs) can be marshaled to support language learning and literacy growth via collaborative work on a design projects spanning diverse conceptualizations of curriculum. FunWritr constitutes the group's current research and development endeavor. Application development is currently underway with testing in an Austin, TX area public school set to begin in late 2009 or early 2010.

During every development cycle of the current project under development by the Langauge Learning & Technology Research and Design Group at the University of Texas at Austin, a limited number of unpaid internships are awarded -typically to University of Texas Computer Science undergraduates interested in participating in central ways in the development of client-side, and/or server-side aspects of an application destined for use in elementary and middle school in the United States, Taiwan, and Korea. Interns spend eight to twelve hours per week working on various aspects of application development, meeting with their development team, the design team, and sitting in on weekly gatherings of the entire research and design team.

Researchers intereseted in joining the group, teachers interested in using FunWritr in their classroom, developers interested in contributing toward future development cycles, presentation, and interview requests should be made via the group's Google account.
